Όταν υπάρχουν δυο αντίπαλοι, τότε θα υπάρχει μέσα μας πολεμική διάθεση, ένταση, διαμάχη. Επειδή νομίζουμε ότι για την ένταση μας φταίει ο «εχθρός», παίρνουμε το μέρος του «φίλου» και τον βοηθάμε για να πολεμήσει ώστε να απαλλαγούμε από τον τραυλισμό.
Ο «εχθρός» όμως για κάποιους λόγους έχει και θέλει τον χώρο του μέσα μας. Αν προσπαθήσει κάποιος άλλος για να τον εκδιώξει από τον χώρο του, τότε θα αντιδράσει και θα προσπαθήσει για να παραμείνει. Ακόμη κι αν εκδιωχθεί, αυτό θα συμβεί προσωρινά. Ο «εχθρός» θα ξαναγυρίσει πιο θυμωμένος και θα προσπαθήσει για να διεκδικήσει ξανά τον χώρο που «δικαιούται». Η ένταση και η διαμάχη παραμένουν.

Κάνουμε προσπάθειες για να γίνουμε καλύτεροι, γιατί θέλουμε να νοιώθουμε καλύτερα, δηλαδή πιο ήρεμοι, χωρίς εντάσεις, τύψεις, ενοχές, κλπ.
Όταν υπάρχουν μέσα μας «εχθροί», δηλαδή αντικρουόμενα θέματα, τότε δεν νοιώθουμε καλά. Όταν δυο αντίπαλοι πάψουν να συγκρούονται μεταξύ τους, τότε δεν υπάρχει ένταση, ούτε διαμάχη. Όταν το ένα θέμα σεβαστεί την ύπαρξη και τον χώρο του άλλου θέματος, τότε τα δυο αντικρουόμενα θέματα θα συμφιλιωθούν.
Η προσπάθεια απαλλαγής είναι μάταιη. Το παράδοξο όμως είναι ότι για να φτάσει κάποιος σε αυτήν την κατανόηση θα πρέπει πρώτα να έχει κάνει πολλές μάταιες προσπάθειες απαλλαγής.
Όσο πιο έντονες και πολλές είναι οι μάταιες προσπάθειες απαλλαγής του «εχθρού», τόσο πιο βαθιά και αληθινή γίνεται η ανάγκη  της συμφιλίωσης.

Για να γίνουμε καλύτεροι δεν πρέπει να απαλλαγούμε από τους «εχθρούς» μας. Κάτι καλό έχουν να μας πουν και αυτοί με την παρουσία τους. Πρέπει να γίνουμε φίλοι με αυτούς. Για να το καταφέρουμε αυτό, θα πρέπει πρώτα να γίνουμε θανάσιμοι εχθροί. Θα πρέπει να έχουμε δώσει πολλές μάχες. Μόνο έτσι θα ματαιωθούμε. Μόνο αν ματαιωθούμε θα μπορέσουμε να κατανοήσουμε την αξία της αποδοχής του «εχθρού». Το ζητούμενο είναι για να νοιώθουμε πιο ήρεμοι και χωρίς εντάσεις.

Η αποδοχή και η συμφιλίωση με τον «εχθρό» είναι ο δρόμος της πραγματικής αλλαγής, της υπέρβασης.
