STUTTERING RESEARCH AND THERAPY CENTRE (S.R.Th.C.)
WHO WE ARE
The “Stuttering Research and Therapy Centre” is a specialized speech and language therapy centre for children, adolescents and adults with fluency disorders.
S.R.Th.C. is part of “logos, Institute for the Disorders of Communication”. "logos" Institute is a specialized speech and language therapy clinic that offers therapy programmes for stuttering since 1992. . The Stuttering Research and Therapy Centre was given its name in 2006 in order to include all the specialized stuttering therapy courses and activities offered by logos Institute under a new label. The new name was also necessary to indicate the centre’s specialization in stuttering.
S.R.Th.C. occupies two full-time, specialized Speech and Language Therapists. Other professionals taking part in the therapy programs include a psychologist and a drama therapist working in close relation to the centre, though not on a full-time basis. All therapists involved have been trained in the U.K. and are members of the RCSLT. As a team, we are in a close collaboration with each other, working on joined projects, developing new ones and providing supervision. Furthermore, decisions for assessment results and therapy plans for our clients are taken on meetings held every week. All therapists follow Continuing Professional Development activities and work according to an action plan for the development of the centre.
Our clientele in S.R.Th.C. comprises of people of all ages, children, adolescents and adults, following different approaches in therapy, for different age groups.
For adults who stutter we offer intensive group therapy courses three times per year (December, June and September) as well as individual therapy. We encourage most of our clients to follow one of these groups instead of following individual therapy. In some cases, the client may start with individual therapy before entering a group and rarely (mostly when there are practical restrictions) we propose individual therapy. The Intensive course lasts two to three weeks during which, the group has 80 hours of therapy. Although the approach we follow is based on the principles of Block Modification, we try to be flexible and eclectic, selecting approaches that are closer to the needs of the specific group. The result is a mixture of different therapy approaches such as block modification, avoidance reduction therapy, personal construct psychology, cognitive therapy. At the end of the intensive phase each member of the group takes the responsibility of his/her own therapy following a self directed plan of actions that lasts for approximately 4-6 weeks. Then the group meets for one or two follow up sessions and all members are invited to a wider self help group. This is the only self-help group in Greece, with its members comprising of graduates of our courses. They have the responsibility of running the group by themselves (we only provide one of our rooms for the meetings). For more information about the approach as well as some evidence on the effectiveness of this approach follow this or this link.
In addition to the Intensive courses for our adult clients we offer:
- short follow up courses
- short drama therapy courses
- short, solution based, therapy courses, aiming at improving communication in specific communicative contexts (e.g. job interviews)
For our adolescent clients we provide two intensive group therapy courses during school vacations and a long term group therapy course (two hours, two times per week) during the school year. In those courses, we also use an eclectic approach (more or less like in our adult groups) and using more role-play, dealing specifically with the communicative situations appropriate to the specific age group. One of our psychologists takes part in some of our activities in order to deal with aspects such as relationships with the opposite sex and self-image, which often come up during group work. There is also a generalization phase for these groups as well as follow up sessions. We also provide individual therapy as a therapy option although we encourage our clients to follow one of the group therapy courses.
Meetings for parents, spouses and mates are also arranged / provided.
All therapists are trained to the Lidcombe Program that we offer to appropriate candidates
For some pre-school children, after the initial assessment, we may work on language development in case a language problem co-exist with the fluency problem. We have developed a short therapy programme for both parents and children that we call “fluency relationships” (sxeseis rois) for those parents who may benefit from routines that enhance their child's fluency.
SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN
We provide individual therapy, supported with drama-therapy sessions and sessions for the parents. We also provide group work for older school age children and group therapy for parents.
We provide therapy both in Greek and English although therapy provision in English is practically limited to individual therapy.
